Just get him to clone his mac information into the router when/ if he gets one and it will work fine
There are ways of getting around the problem of hardware not registering lol.
Thought it might be a problem registering the modem against the account somehow. Doubt if it's a problem with IE not allowing a HTTPS site to function correctly but you never know.
