we already have a nice new modem - but it refuses to work. remember im getting nothing from it when i type

The thing that bothers me is that everything claims it's working. For example the temp registration ip address, the lights on the front of the modem say all is ok. Yet nothing loads up?
Also what should I expect to get when I ping
www.bbc.co.uk from a modem that has not been registered to that computer?
