Actually, you can put in alt-whatever (a non-breaking space) as the first character, and use the spacebar to add subsequent ones... might be a bit quicker.

Also, if you're using Linux, you don't need to use this method as it accept filenames beginning with a normal space character -- same goes for OS X as far as I know.
