However today even the simple set up of PC connected direct to modem would not work unless I ran the install disk. :-(

I agree with what you say 100% if you use Ethernet there *should* be no reason to install anything. Which is why I'm now thinking NTL have crippled this model of modem.

Anyone know anything about the NTL:250 (a.k.a. NTL Home 250 Cable Modem)?
