And is it me, or does it irk me that a great percentage of the TFT screens at the college I go to are not set at their native resolution, thereby resulting in a horrid blurry out of focus image?

I change the settings on all of the ones I go on to their proper resolution - it looks much better. I found one running 800x600 or a 17" TFT - not a nice sight I can tell you!

Shame the IT department hasn't twigged that alot of the new PCs with TFTs are running at a horrid low resolution of 800x600 on a 17" TFT.

And that their new PCs with CRT screens are running at a horrible 60Hz refresh rate (pukes). I would have thought that putting them on the most appropriate setting for good performance and also for user comfort before rolling them out in public would be a priority at least, but no. *dives into display settings control panel after logon*

I commented on this earlier:

It amazes me how many people work on spreadsheets and databases at 800 x 600 - you can hardly see any of what you're working on!

It also amazes me how many people at work happily use a monitor set at a 60Hz refresh rate, which I can hardly look at (certainly for any length of time) without getting a headache...

I think it comes down to poor eyesight (possibly they're too vain to wear the appropriate glasses?): their eyes must have poor acuity not to see the flicker on a screen refreshing at 60Hz, and they like the 800 x 600 display because it makes the letters nice and BIG!

Of course, with reasonable eyesight and only a little nous, you realise that a higher resolution gets you more real estate on the screen: being able to see the whole page of a document at once as you work on it, or a much larger area of a spreadsheet, means you can work much more effectively. I often post spreadsheets from work to myself at home just because, with the higher resolution, I can get stuff worked out so much faster and more effectively than at work.
