What a strange thing. I assume you live in a city and choose your friends very carefully.
I was brought up in the country. I believe I was taught respect and manners and to be hospitable. When I eventually moved to the big city for work, I could not believe it when people walked past me without saying hello. (Yeah, visualise a Crocodile Dundee thing). But if there is only two people on the street, do you keep your eyes down and avoid contact at all costs? Cities are cold horrible places.
The same thing happens with grannies and saying hello to little babies. Would you rather they walked past and avoid contact?
