if the salesman is employed by NTL then he
IS NTL. Whether or not he was told to call at that time (which I very much doubt he was), he represents the whole company so you can't just say it's not NTL's fault. In my opinion anyway.
However, I think it's quite possible that this guy was either a scammer or checking your house out for a future robbery!
It needs reporting to NTL in any case.
