Have you copied across the latest Norton virus sigs? Try using free/demo virus tools - one might succeed where others fail. If Norton identifies each virus you could look on their site for manual removal tips and tools.

I would be surprised if the DVD writer works in safe mode. Can you get a second hard drive from PC World and copy the data to this? (note - not certain that you can run disk management app in safemode - you may need to install a clean copy of XP on this drive.)
