Networking blues
A couple of weeks ago, I switched from dial-up to 1Mb broadband. We have two computers in the house, and we used to get along OK with just plugging/unplugging each one's modem from a trailing phone lead. However, come the day of actualling hoping to be on line at the same time...
I fitted a PCI ethernet card in my XP PC and connected this by cable to a Belkin wireless router, which is connected by cable to my 250 cable modem.
The other computer (in the next room) is running Win 98 and I fitted it with a PCI Belkin wireless card.
The XP PC works fine.
The Win 98 PC never connects immediately it is switched on, although the card's network monitor shows a strong signal. It takes 5 or 6 minutes of cursing before it will connect to the modem. After that it's fine. If the computer is left alone for a few minutes, it will drop the connection. Sleep mode is not turned on.
I have tried to set up WPA or WEP security, but the Win 98 computer simply won't operate with either functioning. However, someone called Jayne and someone else called Robert, who I take to be near neighbours, seem to be connected to my router. Even when the Win 98 computer is connected, this doesn't show up on the LAN> DHCP client list (although Jayne and Robert do).
Any and all suggestions gratefully received.
