TBH, it sounds like a fault either with the modem, or the connection. Either way , you'll have to report the fault to NTL.

I think the problem is finally resolved.
At last managed to get through to NTL. The first guy was pretty useless, and said it was 'definately a [network] cable problem' to 'blow into the ports' and if that did not work 'ask for a new cable'. This didn't sound too convincing to me, and I'll have you know, my ports are perfectly clean! The cheek!

I did however test it with a new cable, and this did not fix the problem.
I called again and spoke to someone else, who was a lot more helpful. Turns out that the modem never registered properly at their end, and they'd given me the wrong pin number (for the old set top box setup). This meant I'd been running on a temporary IP that is refreshed every 20 mins, breaking the connection. He sorted the problem out for me and got me a new pin.
My download speed has gone from 15k/s to about 83k/s and no more disconnections!
Thanks everyone for helping!
