Smile Transfering Files Between PCs Via Network Cable

I want to transfer files between two of my PCs. One has Windows XP and the other has Windows 98. I have bought the necessary crossover cable and have connected the two PCs but neither will acknowledge the existence of the other.

I am a novice in this area. What am I doing wrong and what do I have to do establish a two way connection between them please?

I have looked for articles on the net but they tend to discuss connections using hubs/routers etc. They also tend not to give enough information for a novice like me to carry out the task.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. TIA.
