Matthew, what kind of photographs are you planning on taking with your new camera? Are things like upgradeable lenses and filters important to you? Do you want to use the camera with studio flash or an external flash gun, or just the built-in one? Is size an issue?

You need to ask yourself all these questions before you decide on the style of camera you want to buy.

You dad is only partially correct when he says that SLRs are deliver better shots - nowadays you can get wonderful results with a digital compact. It is harder to get the wonderful shots from a DSLR, but when you manage it..it feels great!
