been happening to me for months in south manchester, sent traceroutes to ntl engineers, had a visit, no improvement.
I have a linksys befr41 wired router, which is 4 years old (ish) which I was considering changing to see if that was the problem, however as it seems i'm far from being the only one, i'll put it down to ntl, and try and be philosophical about it
