Liteon 5001 Died after 8 Months

When i decieded to buy a DVD recorder for under the Telly, I ended off with a Liteon 5001 I think it was, only does DVD+R/RW and fitted the Bill as they say. Now last friday went to record something and it said "No Disc", odd I thought, must be my Media, plonked in a few more and the same. I then tried with a Normal DVD (as in watching it) and I could hear it almost as if it was not moving the head. This was all very odd as it worked fine the day before. Now a few things I noticed in the lead up as it were - I Pressed record and left it for the full 3 hours - it stopped of course when it reached the end of the Disc and was stuck on STOPPING until I had to power down - even then had trouble getting the Disc out as it tried to access it. I had set aside a few DVD+RW as they refused to record or play but upon formatting them on the PC and writing a DVD to it, they worked...

The most suprising part about all of this though was when I took it back to Dixons today, expecting them to send away, get fixed and so forth but nope, they said we replace, but errr we cannot as we dont have that model any more... I then could pick another model, they did have the 5002 (it looks the same apart from a Flap on the DV In etc socket) and does the same job, now priced at £129. He then showed me the Goldmans DVDR + 80 GIG Hd for a bit extra (then what I paid for the Liteon originally) - sounded like a plan as I can now record to HD and what I want to keep can be written to DVD RW (it still only supports DVD+R/RW like).

The build quality is def a Lot better than the Liteon was, more solid looking etc. The only Thing that Worried me at the time as the price, was £199 too much, could I have got this cheaper else were (though they would only have given me a credit note anyhow).. Its a pity it does not do DivX but tbh I can live without this..
