It appears you need to get a better TV aerial which can get a more powerful signal and a freeview box for what you're after.

Or, it may be worth considering getting a second box installed. Of course, the cost incurred is sometimes greater than the need for the second incoming signal, but if needs must...

As for extending the cabling yourself in your home... it may be working fine now, but if you do have any problems in the future, the engineer may within his right put through a bill for his work which you would have to pay as if I understand correctly (and I apologise if this is not the case), you have put a longer cable between where the cable enters the house and the actual STB unit itself.
