Had this come through today.

Further to our conversation earlier; here is the information I promised you:

ntl are aware of the volume of spam (or junk) emails that are being sent over the Internet, many of which are of an offensive nature. This is a concern for all ISP's and their customers and is something that ntl takes very seriously.

Over the past few months ntl has been committed to reducing the level of spam to improve your Internet experience. We have recently introduced several new servers, which will automatically scan all emails that travel through the ntlworld email system for spam. These servers use a number of rules based around the source of incoming emails and the volume of emails coming from particular sources to decide whether to accept any email at all from that source.

Although you will still receive some spam, this new system, which is fully automated, will reduce the amount of spam that you receive, which ntl is committed to improving further. This reduction in spam will reduce the volume of emails travelling through the ntlworld email system, improving its performance and the email experience for you and all your email contacts.

There are additional actions that you can do to try to limit the amount of spam email that you receive. Generally, clicking the "Unsubscribe" button on spam emails from unknown sources is not recommended, as this alerts the sender that this is an active email address, which could result in you receiving more spam rather than less. Please note that ntl do not pass on customer email addresses or personal information to any third parties who may generate such spam emails. If you would like more information on how to further reduce the amount of spam emails that you receive, please visit the Dealing with spam help section of the ntlworld.com website.

ntl have prepared the following information to assist your understanding of the new anti-spam legislation that came into effect on 11th December 2003.

The UK Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations, which implement an EU directive of the same name, require companies to ensure they have consent from individuals before they can send them electronic communications for marketing purposes. It is now a criminal offence to send unsolicited commercial emails or text messages unless the recipient has agreed to receive them.

However, the ban doesn't mean that UK inboxes will now be free of spam. Much of the spam that hits Europe originates from abroad, mainly from the United States, and escapes the new law. Companies using tracking devices such as "cookies" on their websites will also have to tell users and provide an opportunity to reject them.

Companies or individuals that break the laws can be reported to the Office Of The Information Commissioner, which has powers to take them to the courts. If there is an enforcement, the organisation or individual may face fines of up to £5,000. In certain circumstances they may also be sued by the recipients of the spam.
