Question Help with transfering DVD to PC

I've just got a DVD recorder and have been transfering old video tapes to it so I can load it into the PC for editing etc.

The files are VOB ones and I'm finding that no matter how short or long a recording I do, each time on the DVD I get a VOB file broken down into NINE parts. This is baffling me as it seems to record whatever I do, divides it by nine and thus I get nine chunks. These obviously cut off and restart so I don't get an even flow. (hope I'm making sense here).

Firstly, is this right that it records this way? And is there anything I can do to stop it and make the file just the one?
