It would always be an error to copy the MAC address of a cable modem into a router configuration: this would result in a duplicate MAC address on the same network segment.

What router manufacturers sometimes recommend is copying the MAC address of a PC's ethernet card into the router. This is only necessary if cable service provisioning is tied to the MAC address of the customer's PC. On NTL, this would be necessary only in ex-CWC regions.
