Removing the devices from the PC will have allowed the PC to re-discover things from scratch.
Rebooting the PC without the USB cable will have helped the PC to sort itself out.

Interestingly, I left the printer power unplugged all night to no avail. The problem was occurring on both PC's so it had to be stemming from the printer. The re-install
must have changed something internally in the printer to make it work again........so the usb controller must have been the source of the problem.
