This is happening fairly frequently, I know the problem quite well

Tmpgenc encodes the avi no problem but no sound.
The way I do it (been doing it for a couple of months, on problem avi`s) is to first use winavi to convert to mpeg1. The mpeg1 that winavi throws out is still not stable (it always stutters throughout) and then use tmpgenc to convert winavi`s mpeg1 to another mpeg1. When you have tmpgencs mpeg 1, you can carry on normally to convert to dvd. Always works, I`ve just finished one this morning
