Sounds like your boot manager isnt pointing to the correct location on your HD, compare your partition table to your boot config and make sure it isnt doing something silly like booting into the swap space. Not knowing your boot manager, I cant tell you exactly where it is, but shouldn't be too difficult to find. You can use your install disks as rescue CD's, although personally I prefer Knoppix.
The other option is to join one of the newbie mailing lists. There you can be sure of someone running into a similar problem and how they resolved it.
