There are alot of good recovery packages available and most will allow you to recover from deleted files, a formatted disk and a deleted partition. Here's a few links:

I don't know about any free recovery tools but there probably are some around, however, you could always just evaluate some of the above packages because why shell out some money if you're not guaranteed to recover the data.
