I would get a new email account until this one is sorted

Having a Gmail or Hotmail account as backup is always handy.
Have you actually got anything in your ntlworld email inbox/ outbox/sent items at the moment that could be causing a snag? It could just be your friend is finding out how unreliable NTL email can be.
