On the out-Torying the Tories, have a read of Nick Cohen's book which looks at how New Labour imported 'triangulation' from the States. The basic tenet is that you neutralise the opposition by pre-empting and matching or exceeding their political initiatives. An interesting read - but can't remember what it's called.
