While *locally* the 12th of July parades commerate the Battle of the Boyne, it also represents a wider 17th centurary European issue. Namely religious freedom, and the freedom to worship in whatever church you wished without the treat of persecution. You need to remember that most of the 1600's saw widespread religious wars/persecution in Western Europe.

Oh, and one other thing, Prince William (of Orange) had *Papal Blessing* in his war against King James. Go figure.
