I forsee an argument along the lines of "The television is fine, why should we?". Can anyone tell me how much hassle would be involved in changing over to a cable modem? Are NTL likely to try to discourage it, what sort of wiring/cabling might be involved, any costs? I'm wondering if it might be worth just doing that if I can.

Your parents won't lose anything by swapping the box but you can argue the point that it is more reliable/ stable than the Pace units and it's a nice shiny silver unit that looks a lot nicer than the old STBs. As for getting a SACM put in, unless there is a problem with the STB NTL will normally refuse to install a SACM as the Set Top Box is there to provide the broadband feed.
All that is involved in the swap is the old STB is unplugged and the new one is connected in it's place, it doesn't take long and rarely involves any problem for the customer
