I came across the same problem when I upgraded to 2mb, was getting the error "cable modem is not registered for this user name".

Phoned CS got the usual itÃƒÆ’Ã‚Â¢ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¡Ã‚Â ¬ÃƒÂ¢Ã¢â‚¬Å¾Ã‚Â¢s "not available in your area until next week"

I had replaced my STB for a cable modem last summer, which gave me a new account.
I came up with the idea of trying my old account login and it upgraded my cable modem straight away.

So I would say to you try any old NTL accounts you got, one might work.
