I got the cane when I was at senior school, as did several of my friends. It was the easiest punishment I ever had to deal with, a few thwacks over the palm of the hand at it was all over, took about 5 minutes tops during the school day. Compare that to an hour long detention which takes place in *my* time. I hear all this talk that corporal punishment should be brought back, but if I were given a choice between an hour's detention and the cane then I'd pick the cane every time as the easy option.
