With respect mate thats exactly what your asking, your speculating what ntl are going to be doing with future technologies and products and then asking for a discussion on whether they're going to be unbiased enough to run it to the customers advantage.
Of course they wont, but hopefully they'll be smart enough to try and find a middle ground where they can provide a service that is attractive to enough people to make the share holders a nice tidy return on their investment. Which really is what it boils down to.
As Scrotnig says its market forces that will drive the issue, ntl along with every other company will attempt to screw the maximum possible profit out of the customer.
I would love cheaper broadband with no limits on what you can do with it but its not gonna happen in a capitalist society, an unfortunate fact of life.
