Obvious question, but when you lost your net connection did you try resetting the set top box. I lose my connection on average once a week and all it requires is to reboot the pc, then unplug the set top box for 30 seconds and plug it in again, and it's back.

If you've got a seperate modem I guess the procedure would be different but I've got no experience with these.
