Rather than using any online speed test (which is subject to any problems with their server, such as it being overloaded), I would recommend Dan Elwell's downloadable broadband speed test (
http://www.broadbandspeedtest.net/). It's a small program that accesses various well known servers and measures their response times to give you an indication of how fast your connection is. It can also help identify some problems.
