I'd put money on it being the fact that you are now connecting via an extension lead up the stairs.

I know it's prorbaly not what you want to hear, but it would appear that the problem lies with you & your setup, rather than ntl/BT.

If you connect your PC downstairs direct to the ADSL socket, & the problem is still present, you can feel fairly comfortable ringing ntl & reporting a problem.

Until that point you are just wasting time talking about it.
