There are many speed tests available. Have a look at
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/article.php?a=22 which tells you about speed tests and also applies to ADSL. Dan Elwels test is one of the best.
You can only keep it in the lounge for 15 mins?
Are they capping lounge use now?
