I sometimes feel a little puzzled by the way that the more evangelical Protestants seem to try very hard to write the Catholic Church out of Christianity. As far as my limited knowledge goes, evangelicals seem to manage to accept the church up to about the time of Augustine in the 5th Century (Calvinists especially make a great play of Augustine's theology). From then until the Reformation, give or take the odd Cathar, Lollard or Hussite heretic, the Catholic church was the
only church in Western Europe. So, for a period of over 1000 years God appears to have been quite prepared to tolerate this "false" church. Why?
