They used to say you could whistle down a coal mine up north and a fast bowler or centre-half would emerge. Well, Lancashire has the highest number of capped players in eight of the most popular sports over the last 100 years †“ 14 per cent †“ and has also been the birthplace of the largest number of top footballers with 19 per cent, two points more than London.
The county's top five footballers caps-wise are Tom Finney (76), Gary Neville (now 73), Alan Ball (69), Paul Scholes (66) and David Watson (65). The survey of 36 English counties was carried out by Barclays for their Spaces for Sports campaign, a £30 million investment in facilities and equipment.
