In other words, a router on 192.168.254.254 would not be able to communicate with a PC on 192.100.0.1 or 10.10.10.50 but would be able to on 192.168.0.1... the first two octets are important.

Yep, IP address on computer is set to 192.168.0.2 with router on 192.168.0.1.
really can't work this one out, think i'm gonna try and do a clean install of OS X on my iPod and boot from that to see if its something to do with the way NTL has modified the system.
