What's the default IP of the router?
e.g. If it's 10.0.x.x you need to
a) have the same IP range 10.0.x.x
b) use the same subnet

In other words, a router on 192.168.254.254 would not be able to communicate with a PC on 192.100.0.1 or 10.10.10.50 but would be able to on 192.168.0.1... the first two octets are important.
