Unhappy Mystified

Hi

For a while now I've been using a proxy server as NTL and MSN have both been blaming each other about why I cant get into my hotmail and keep getting the dreaded error 404. The proxy, which isnt an NTL one seemed to sort it out. OK so far.....

Get up today and for no apparent reason sites wont open and if they do they dont open properly. Grrrrrr. First question....my PC has no viruses and no Trojans and is pretty much clutter free. Why oh why does this happen for no reason at all? Talk to NTL and its 10 different Indians with 10 different answers.

So I take off the proxy server and it makes no difference. Unplug the cable from the modem and after a couple of attempts, slowly but surely it corrects itself. Sites now open fine, if anything its quicker! Second question...Why?

Third question....So do I need a proxy server? Is a proxy a bad thing? I was with AOL before and though the service was poor at least it worked. When NTL works, it's great, when it doesnt its awful and I refuse to spend 45 minutes in a call queue to talk to a foreigner in a call centre who cant help me and tells me it must be a problem with my pc! And before I am slated I should say my girlfriend is foreign (American) and I work in a call centre too!

At present I feel as though my service is very unreliable. Sites open ok now...BUT FOR HOW LONG?????? I can access hotmail, which was the original problem, but again, FOR HOW LONG? It's proxy server on, proxy server off, it's back on again etc and I feel like I'm constantly firefighting and I've had my pc checked, it's clean and is working fine. I never had these kind of problems with AOL, it was slow but it worked. Right now its literally a case of I log off and I dont know whether I'm going to be able to get online or not in the morning and frankly, as a customer, I think I deserve better.

Sorry to moan but I'd value any answers, feedback etc and if anyone feels I'm talking utter rubbish, please do say. I'm not very tech aware and I expect to be emigrating to the US later this year but in the meantime, is 8 months of trouble free computing really too much to ask?
