Regarding your IP problem, it sounds like your broadband connection needs looking at. When you turn on the STB, it should start the network light flashing, and searching for an IP (network address). This should take around 10-15 seconds (or so I have been told by Customer Services). When it finds one, the network light will be steady.
If it's losing the connection randomly (it sounds like it is) then it sounds like your signal levels are too low or too high. Unfortunately, you can't do anything to correct this. You need to call NTL and get them to look at it.
