Actually, you're right - I don't think that this
is the worst decision by a ref. At the end of the day, the linesmen are there to help the ref is unsighted, out of position etc. What I think this is is the highest profile one for a while and, it must be said, an absolute howler of a mistake, when the ball was a good yard over the line.
One of the issues in my mind is what's the point of the fourth official? I know he's there in case the ref gets injured, but why can't he advise the ref in cases like this - all in all, it's a good case for some form of technological back up.
