The fact that he was one of the "original" ntl boys (he was there when ntl started up) probably had something to do with him holding on for so long. The fact that previous CEO Knapp and previous chairman Blumenthal have since "departed", not to mention new people own the company, probably had a lot to do with him "quitting"
