When she got into her car in the early hours of the morning after leaving a party, the farmer expected a typically quiet journey home along the back roads of rural Gloucestershire.
However, as she neared her home in the quiet village of Whelford, she found herself in the midst of a “once-in-a-lifetime” event.
The woman, who does not want her name to be made public, was stunned to spot in the beams of her headlights a group of balaclava-wearing men dressed in black running into the darkness. They are suspected of plotting a terror attack and she has been credited with preventing a possible disaster after she rang the police.
Her quick-thinking led to the arrest of the men just 300m from RAF Fairford, the base used by the US air force that borders the village. Locals said that she should be given a bravery award. She said security officials should be embarrassed that her intervention was necessary.
“I’m astonished, to be honest,” she told The Times. “I literally cannot believe that they were in this heightened alert state and I had to tell them.”…
… She initially tried to phone the Ministry of Defence police number that locals had been given to report suspicious activity. There was no answer, she said, describing this as “astonishing”. She then tried 101 to no avail.
Once she arrived home shortly after she phoned 999 and sent a message to the local residents’ WhatsApp group warning them to be on alert “because we’re not really a door-locking kind of village”.
