Sky's email is a branded version of Yahoo Mail, and as long as the email addresses are in use Yahoo keeps them open independent of any Sky relationship, similar to it keeping Yahoo email addresses open.

VMs was a branded Gmail for a while but I do think they always made it clear that the email was for when you were a customer so with no disrespect to you but it has always been a bad idea to use it for something that you are likely to want to use ad infinitum as it was never offered as a permanent feature. Comtel/NTL/Virgin media was not my first ISP AOL UKOnline and Screaming.net were back then AOL was my main email but as soon as Hotmail was bought by Microsoft I switched and that became my main for a long time then gmail took over but i still use an @hotmail address that I have had for decades
