Some people do believe in the afterlife, visitations, spirits (good and bad), voodoo, etc etc.
Possibly the same type of people who believe the Earth is flat, have seen (and been abducted by) Aliens, believe Fairies are real, and truly believe their particular God (and there are many) is listening to them.
To be fair to Richard though, there have been (and will be again) people who commit some horrific crimes that say the voices in their head told them to do it
