Are you including Johnson, Rees-Mogg, Gove, Badenoch, et al in those who "didn’t really want it"?
It’s alway fun to hear the "true believers" refrain of " A big boy didn’t do it and ran away" rather than face the reality of it’s impossible to satisfy an ill-defined* and non-specific set of aims besides the all-encompassing "Leave the EU"…
