The reality is that the investigation team would have worked on appearing credible first and gaining trust before meeting them, I imagine.

I also think the two Reform senior aides were pretty careless and, of course, completely willing to do this without thinking.

Farage was very careful about what he would openly say in the meeting. The reporters asked about the donation that was being planned (which would be illegal) and he didn't go 'we'll get away with it' and just moved on.
