Last night’s episode was frustrating. Full of very different ideas that never properly meshed together. I still think their biggest problem is they’re looking back at some of the fluff-filled TNG filler episodes and trying to emulate them as if they were core trek rather than realising most of them would never have got made had that series not had 23 or more episodes to fill each season. When you only have 10, they all need to be as good as Yesterday’s Enterprise, or Masks. Ironically, there were distinct emotional echoes of Inner Light in the last few minutes of last night’s episode but they felt tagged-on. That whole sequence felt like it belonged in a different (and much better) story.
