Seems to be a bit of a 'rabbit hole' to me. As I understand it, research probably involves gathering figures, measurements, extrapolations and conclusions done by others and pulling it all together to make sense (lol) of it, in which case 'facts' go even further back in the chain of 'writing a paper' on something.
