If Sky disabled their boxes and made them obsolete, it would cost them a fortune as they would be obliged to pay to have them all recycled.

Far better for them to provide even a limited service and gift them to their former satellite customers. Then, if they become obsolete at some point, the responsibility to recycle them passes to the individual owner.
