It was running inside a sandbox, AFAIK that’s a virtual machine, a software emulation a computer that runs inside the operating system of an actual hardware computer. The researchers believed the environment was isolated, so it in effect did not have access to a network. The AI discovered a vulnerability in the sandbox software that nobody previously knew existed.
In future they might want to run these sorts of tests on hardware that is physically unplugged from the network, though if the machine has a wifi card in it, you couldn’t preclude the possibility of the AI working out how to activate it …
